Melbourne racer, William Calleja has won the Mini category in the WSK Super Masters Series event at Cremona in Italy, his second win at that track.
The BabyRace team made a last minute decision to change to slick tyres after a wet weekend, which proved to be masterful.
Calleja worked his way forward to the runner up position and was one second behind the leader. He was able to force a mistake to take the lead and subsequently the win.
“We had no idea what to do at the start, so we decided to go with slicks,” said Calleja after the race.
“It had been raining all weekend from qualifying and dried out for the final, to be honest, the track didn’t change that much during the final. I was able to work my way forward and the leader ran wide which allowed me to get into the lead and then I was able to build a gap.”
Earlier in the weekend, he qualified in 21st position and elevated himself forward to finish the Pre-Final in second.
From the two WSK Super Masters events held thus far, Calleja has now finished on the podium twice, having finished second at round one.
There were other Aussies in action at the event, with Lewis Francis finishing 14th from the 58-strong OK category. Also in that category were Dante Vinci (28th) and Xavier Avramides (32nd). Hudson Petta didn’t qualify for the Mini Under 10 category, finishing the second Pre-Final in 19th position.
There are two rounds remaining, continuing this weekend at Franciacorta before coming to a conclusion on March 2 at Sarno.
